How to Improve Your CIBIL Score Before Applying for a Loan
BharatBest Editorial · 4 min read · 17 August 2026

Your CIBIL score is one of the first things a lender evaluates. A score of 750 or above generally qualifies you for a wider choice of lenders and sharper pricing.
Start by obtaining your credit report and checking it for errors — incorrect loan accounts or wrongly reported defaults can be disputed with the bureau. Next, bring credit card utilisation below 30% of your limit; high utilisation signals stress even if you pay on time.
Pay every EMI and card bill on or before the due date. Payment history is the single largest factor in your score. Avoid applying for multiple loans or cards in a short window — each application triggers a hard enquiry that temporarily lowers your score.
Finally, keep older credit accounts open where feasible. A longer, well-managed credit history works in your favour. Improvements compound over 3–6 months of disciplined behaviour, so start early — ideally before you need the loan.
